Wow, stand at the base of this gigantic 1,267ft rock and tell me you want to climb it. What I remember was a ranger telling me that many people do just that. It has been climbed by persons as old as 87 years old as young as 7 years old. Well, I just walked around it instead. I figured my walk around the base of about 1 mile (5,280 ft.) with half (well maybe not half) the nerve is equivalent to going up and down (2,534 ft.) the rock since it is only about half the distance.
I loved my visit to Devils Tower and found an article from mentalfloss.com that shares some of the Indian names for the Butte along with other fascinating facts. The article was originally published prior to the 40th anniversary of the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I encourage you to read the article by clicking here.
I was surprised by the memories of the Devils Tower family vacation that returned to me while reading the article. I encourage you to include a visit to Devils Tower when near the Black Hills, I must say we chose wisely.
